Grub Gone Wild
By Latanya Staten
It is second lunch for Community High School and all the students start piling in to get their trays that have nachos and rice on them. Amber Watts, at Community High School junior is disgusted about the food at CHS, but actually thinks that sometimes it can be good. “I think that at times they don’t care what they put on our trays,” said Watts.
Students at CHS, Milwaukee Business, and Work Institute only have hot lunch. Many other schools have the choice between enjoying taco bars, ordering pizza, buying from food stands, or even going out for lunch. The cooks may like cooking but the students do not always enjoy eating the food.“I have been working as a cook for Sarah Scott and Community High School for about 4 to 5 years now,” said Tanya Govan, the hot lunch cook for Community, Work Institute, and Milwaukee Business. “The only thing I do not like about cooking here is that sometimes the kids can be disrespectful, otherwise I like cooking.”
Along with the students not wanting to eat hot lunch, they cannot even get a good drink of water because something is wrong with our drinking fountains. When we want water from them they are not turned on, but when they are on the water tastes like it just came from the toilet.
A lot of people say that we do not have the opportunity to have the luxuries of amazing food and sparkling clean water fountains because our school is financially unstable.
David Moore a junior at CHS said I think hot lunch is better in the suburbs’ than in Milwaukee and I see it on TV a lot.
Many parents say that students should be grateful for the hot lunch program because it helps many unfortunate kids that have even less than we do and that do not get the chance to eat at least one good meal a day. That is
very true and a lot of kids would probably go hungry without hot lunch.Watts said, “I am not grateful for hot lunch, if it’s not good it’s not good.” Do parents actually see the food that their kids eat? “It may be considered healthy but it sure doesn’t taste like it.”
According to Watts sometimes the food is good, but sometimes the food does not look like it is cooked right. Could it be the food itself or just the people that cook it?
When Community High school’s lunch lady ‘Tanya was asked if the food was ever brought to them spoiled or out dated she said, “No it is sent to them new in cans from Sysco.” So if the problem is not the food or the people who make it, then the problem lies somewhere else.
“The problem is not the cooks and it is definitely not the students, it is the food. Why cannot we have restaurant food.” said Watts.
According to Tanya, if the manager said that they could order from restaurants she would do it once in a while, but the manager wants to order healthy food so the restaurants are not in the question. “The students should be grateful for the food we give them. In other places kids do not get anything.”According to Watts our school is broke but we should not have to suffer. And hot lunch is not the only thing wrong with our school. Our water fountains are always out of order.
“I do not drink from the water fountains because I do not trust the stuff that people put in it” said Watts.
“I only drank from it once. I closed my eyes and remember spitting it out because it tasted nasty and warm” said Angel Staten a Community High School junior.
The students complain about the nasty hot lunch food and the problem with the water fountains, but nothing happens. Instead of complaining all the time, why not do something about it? Start petitions or talk to someone in high authority
